TUi MAMAKi (formally of The Mamaku Project) disappeared to Bulgaria in 2014, where she trained for the last 3 years in the techniques and repertoire of Bulgarian folklore. (This is especially apparent in her acapella trio formation ACAPOLLiNATiONS, which also features Chelsea Prastiti and Siobhan Grace.)
With the recordings on FLY, Mamaki wanted to discover what music would come through her fingers, tongue and mind, if she listened, post "Bulgaria"? What aspects of the music she had studied been digested, and how would these come through, naturally, into composition?
Through this kind of exile/immersion - suitably assisted by the breaking up of her previous band, Mamaki has uncovered a new sound for herself - an intimate Neo-Folk, underpinned by hypnotic odd-meter Bulgarian rhythms, and clothed in delicate and dreamy, eastern-tainted melodies.
To coincide with the release of Fly on November 16th, Mamaki will embark on a national tour.
