Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have officially released the epic video for their brand new single ‘Downtown.’ The song is a multi-part, genre-busting journey through the decades. It features Hip Hop pioneers Grandmaster Caz, Kool Moe Dee and Melle Mel on the group rap chorus and Eric Nally on the soaring hook.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and the featured artists will perform the live world-premiere of the song on the MTV VMA’s on Sunday, August 30.
Musically, ‘Downtown’ is the most ambitious undertaking by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to date. Having worked on the song for over a year and a half, the song began in sessions on their last world tour and continued to their studio in Seattle. Ryan describes his inspiration: "Not only was hip hop incredible in the late 70's/early 80's, but rock and roll was incredible, too. Phenomenal things were happening on completely polar ends of the spectrum. The challenge was how to make them fit together."
The video was directed by Ben, Ryan and longtime collaborator, director, Jason Koenig. Filmed over the course of one week in Ryan’s hometown of Spokane, Washington, it stars Macklemore, Eric Nally, Grandmaster Caz, Kool Moe Dee and Melle Mel along with thousands of extras. The full-scale production shut down the central business district of Spokane to make way for street dancing, moped racing, parades complete with giant balloon animals and much, much more.
